AFYD launches first Qualified Game Angling Course

On Monday June 15th 2009 Angling For Youth Development unveiled its new game angling course which has been credit rated and levelled on the Scottish Course Qualifications Framework at Blairgowrie High School, Perthshire.

Present were members of Scotland’s angling community, Government, and local authorities, to be fully briefed about AFYD's growing number of projects and courses.

The course has been granted Level 5 status with up to 26 SCQF points available on completion. This unique modular programme for Trout Fishing encompasses both the practical skills acquisition and theoretical knowledge required by Anglers to understand and appreciate the finer points of angling.

The pilot course entered the school curriculum at Blairgowrie High School on the18th June 2009.

On the Scottish Course Qualifications Framework Level 5 status is broadly comparable to, but not the equivalent of, an SVQ level 2 or GCSE Standard Grade. Click here to see SQA Points

Courses - learn about fishing, angling and fishery science

AFYD is a powerful educational and vocational training tool, whilst our programmes are very much angling based, we have designed and are continually developing a range of interchangeable modules to create programmes for teaching people about the sport and our environment.

We operate from our own sites and our courses are designed to compliment the curriculum in both Primary and Secondary Education. We work very closely with local education authorities to ensure a high standard of course delivery both in the classroom and on the river bank. And in Scotland, AFYD represent the Trout in the Classroom U.K. project.

We even take the participants fishing!

AFYD currently provides Introductory Courses in Game Angling, Sea Angling, and Coarse Fishing techniques.

From June 2009 the AFYD Game Angling Award Course and the Fishery Science Award Course are available.

Each course consists of a series of modules. To see details please click on the links above.

Each module carries Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework Points awarded on completion.

Instructors and volunteers

All AFYD coaches and instructors are professionally trained by Dreamstore Academy, who provide a level 2 SVQ Award in angling coaching. This qualification has been mapped by the Scottish Qualifications Authority and surpasses the basic requirements of the United Kingdom coaching certificate courses that are currently on offer. The Dreamstore level 2 course includes risk assessing bio mechanics, nutrition in sport, psychology, angling techniques, coaching skills, child protection, first aid, and disability awareness.

Each AFYD project is led by a project leader all of whom have a minimum of an SVQ Level 2 Coaching award in angling.  They are supported by a senior instructor and other suitably qualified volunteers.

All AFYD coaches and volunteers are subject to enhanced disclosure, they carry £5,000,000 public liability insurance and they have a number of additional skill sets to assist in delivering the AFYD program. In addition to the Dreamstore level 2 qualification, AFYD coaches receive training in dealing with dyslexia, drug and alcohol counselling, mentoring and water safety.

All coaches, instructors, and volunteers undergo regular additional training to ensure that the high standards expected of them are maintained and that they are able to deliver the AFYD educational and training packages wherever they go.

Currently AFYD appears to be the only angling training organisation in the UK that holds regular water safety training sessions for its volunteer staff, to ensure that they are fully conversant with the safety equipment provided and able to use it effectively in a rescue situation.

Every child or young person we work with near water is issued with a life jacket and undertakes a course on water safety.
